Making Hokey Pokey

 Aim:

How to make Hokey Pokey

Method

Equipment:

  • White sugar
  • golden syrup
  • baking soda
  • table spoon 
  • sauce pan
  • cookie cuter
  • baking paper
  • Bunsen burner
  • tripod
Instructions
  1. get your equipment
  2. wash your hands 
  3. turn on the Bunsen burner
  4. set up tripod
  5. Put sauce pan on top of the tripod
  6. Add 5 table spoons of sugar to the pot
  7. add 2 table spoons of golden syrup 
  8. mix it together and let boil for 2 minuets 
  9. turn off the gas and add 1 table spoons baking soda 
  10. Mix it so it doesn't burn 
  11. scrape the hokey pokey on to the baking paper 
  12. let it cool for at least 30sc or more 
  13. press a cookie cutter into the hokey pokey

Making ginger Beer

 Aim: 

I want to know how to brew ginger beer.

Method     

Equipment

  • ginger
  • cup 
  • water (warm)
  • yeast
  • spoon 
Instructions
  1.  Get your equipment 
  2. put 1 table spoon of ginger in the cup 
  3. Half fill the cup with water warm
  4. Add 1 teaspoon of yeast
  5. Mix it together 
  6. Leave it to ferment six days 
  7. After 1 week, taste it  
Results 
 
Discussion:

What is fermentation?
chemical breakdown so it can heat it up 
what are the best conditions for brewing 
Temperatures of 20°c to 22°c 
What is the difference between beer,cider,wine,vodka,whisky
vodka is made of potato

Blind taste testing

Aim: I wont to find out if food tastes differently when you cant see or smell

instructions 
  1. get your equipment 
  2. wash your hands 
  3. put on your blind fold 
  4. block your nose
  5. put your hand out 
  6. get your food (place on hand)
  7. Eat it 
  8. unblock your nose

eating hot chilli

 Aim: I want to found out how to get rid of burning  chilli off of my tongue.

Equipment:

  • Popsicle stick
  • chilli 
  • water
  • coca cola 
  • milk
  • timer
  • cup 

instructions:

  1. Get your Equipment 
  2. Scoop some chilli onto your stick 
  3. Start the timer and eat the chilli 
  4. stop the timer at 4 minutes 
  5. rate how hot your mouth is 
  6. Do experiment again but drink water after 2 minutes 
  7. Do experiment again but drink coca cola after 2 minutes 
  8. Do experiment again but drink milk after 2 minutes

bacteria around our school

 Aim:

I want to find out what type of bacteria is around around our school.

Research:




Method:

Equipment: 
  • Cue tips
  • Agar plates
  • Maker pen
  • Tape
Instructions:

  1. get your equipment
  2. wash your hands 
  3. Use a maker pen to write your name and location on the lid
  4. wet the cue tip and swab the surface
  5. gently swab the agar plate 
  6. Tape around the edges 
  7. put the agar in the incubator overnight 
  8. observe the plate the next day

measuring coke and mentors

Aim: I want to find out how many bubbles are made when mentos is dropped in coke 
method:
equipment 
  • coke
  • coke zero
  • sprite
  • mentos
  • measuring cylinder
  • safety glass
  • liquid soap
  • small beaker 
Instructions:
  1. grab your equipment
  2. put on your safety glass
  3. pour 20 ml of coke into 100 ml measuring cylinder  
  4. add 5 ml of soap to coke   

results

Milk Plastic

Aim:
I want to find out how to make plastic milk.


Method

Equipment-
  • Milk (1 cup)
  • pot / microwaveable container
  • white vinegar
  • paper towel
  • spoon
  • Mug
  • measuring spoon (teaspoon)
Instructions-
  1. Get the equipment
  2. Pour 1 cup of milk in the pot or microwaveable container.
  3. Heat the milk in the microwave or on the stove until its steaming.
  4. add 4 teaspoons of white vinegar into a mug.
  5. add the milk into the mug with the white vinegar.
  6. stir the mixture with a spoon.
  7. stack 4 layers of paper towel on a surface that is safe to get damp.
  8. scoop out the curds with a spoon and place them on the paper towels.
  9. fold the paper towels over the curd and press down to absorb the excuses liquid.
  10. colour, shape or mold the dough as you like.
  11. put all your creations on a paper towel and let them dry over night.

Skittle colours

 Aim:
I want to find out what happens when you put skittles in water 
Method:
Equipment
  • Petri Dish
  •   skittles
  • warm water
  • small beaker
  1. Get your equipment 
  1. spreed out the skittles around the edge 
  1. gently pour the warm water into the middle of the petri dish 
  1. watch what happens 

Instructions

why did the colour leave the skittles.
The reason why the colour left the skittles is because the skittles are coved in sugar water 

why are the colours not mixing 
it is because it creates a water solution with slightly different properties 


Edible slime

 Aim:

i want to find out how to make edible slime

method:


Equipment:

marshmallows

Popsicle stick 

cups 

icing sugar

microwave

oil


instructions:

  1. Get all of you equipment
  2. Melt marshmallows in microwave for 10 s
  3. add icing sugar
  4. mix icing sugar and marshmallows together    
  5. wait 10 minutes to cool down 
  6. mix more icing sugar in with your hands
  7. add oil if u want 
results


 

The slime felt weird it was really sticky  but then it went really hard it did not taste that good.

Beaker:A beaker is for carrying liquids.




Bunsen burner: A Bunsen burner is to make a fire with gas and melt some stuff









gauze mat: A gauze mat is to sport a container such as a beaker   









funnel: A funnel is to help a liquid of some sort into a smaller container

test tube: A rest tube is to hold some liquids for testing  









Canonical flask: A canonical flask is for mesmerising and holding liquids  

spatula: A spatula is used for scraping off things that are stuck to a surface 









measuring cylinder: A measuring cylinder is for measuring liquids  










scissor tongs: Scissor tongs are to hold a container that is hot 









tripod: A tripod is to hold a container well it melts over a Bunsen burner

How To Light A Bunsen Burner

Aim:

I want to find out how to SAFELY light a Bunsen Burner 


Method: 

  • Heatproof mat 
  • lighter
  • Bunsen burner 


instructions
  1. get your equipment 
  2. put your safety glasses on  
  3. connect the hose and the gas
  4. turn the collar and close the air hole 
  5. slightly  light the the match or lighter over the gas but do not turn the gas tap on before you light it 
  6. if you are not useing the Bunsen burner turn off the gas

Hands on Fire

 Aim: 

I want to find out how to set myself on fire safely 

Method:

Equipment 

  • Large container of water 
  • Detergent (liquid soap)
  • Hose 
  • Gas 
  • Lighter 
  • safety glasses 
Instructions 

  1. getting the equipment 
  2. Fill up container with water (2 cm deep)
  3. put some liquid soap and gently mix around  
  4. connect the hose to the gas tap 
  5. turn on the gas and bubble it into the water 
  6. tie you hair back 
  7. roll up your sleeve up past your elbow
  8. wet your hand and arms with water 
  9. with two hand scoop the bubbles not the water     
  10. Take two steps forward
  11. light the bubbles 
  12. open up both and give a high five

safety in the Lab

Rules
  1. You must follow instructions given by the by the teacher.. 
  2. You must not enter the lab without the teacher.
  3. Report any breakages. 
  4. Shoes must be worn at all times.
  5. Do not eat or drink in the lab.
  6. If you spill something tell the teacher then clean it up.
  7. Wash your hands after doing experiments
  8. A  heatproof mat should always be used when heating 
  9. If in doubt,ask the teacher.
  10. Never taste or smell chemicals.


Safety in the Laboratory

Activity 1.
Copy the sentence and finish it off.

1. Liquids do not go into the bins, because it will leak 
2. Solids do not go down the sink because it will block the sink 
3. Wear safety glasses when you do experiments,
because it will hurt your eyes 
4. Put your chair under the desk, and stand at the bench
when you do experiments, because u will be to close 
5. Bags do not go on the desks, because it will be in the way 
6. Long hair should be tied back, because it will get in the way 
7. Do not smell the chemicals, because they are dangers to smell 
8. Walk, don’t run around the room, because u will hurt your self 
9. Do not eat or drink in the lab, because there are chemicals in the lab
