Waterloo road

Waterloo road is dangerous for hornby high and hornby primary. We should have a crossing light.I think Waterloo road is not safe because there are big trucks that go down the road and go in the middle where people stand so they can cross. We have cars going down the road fast off of the main road. There are some trucks that are huge and take the hole road up.Its not that busy when it is school hours but it is really busy when it is after school and before school.

Here is a link to a video about Waterloo road

Navigation

This week we did navigation we had to research about the early Polynesian navigation this is our research  of them

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How do you find your way around? The Polynesian wayfinder navigated the Pacific ocean using the sun moon fish debris. Polynesian wayfinder used these to navigate their way around because they don't have the technology we have now  they use stars, clouds and birds.

North stars are fixed points; they mark the point of the north. Southern cross showed where south was there's a line across the sky connected to 2 other stars then you look down on an angle then you have found  south. The Polynesian use the stars to see where north south east and west is sometimes they use their hands to navigate where the stars are.

Big group of clouds could be above mountions so you don't know there is a mountains there. Clouds reflect islands because it could be raining or it would be over top of the water on the island. The Polynesian use the clouds to find the way the wind is blowing because the way the wind is blowing the clouds move the way the wind is blowing.

Near islands can only go so far out they will have no food and they will be tired. Birds can only fly 190km from land so they can find their way back. The Polynesian use the birds to find the island because they can see how the birds were flapping their wings because they get tired.

Wayfinders navigated by northern star fixed point and they used clouds and they followed the long tailed cuckoo. The clouds the wayfinder were looking for are stratus clouds and lenticular clouds.

Communication challenge

Today we had to do a Communication challenge. We had to communicate from 100m away. Me and Cayleigh did sign language. This is our sign langue sheet. Mrs gave us a word and we had to use this sheet to tell the person 100m away.

The thing we did well was get the word to the other people the thing I would change is having other communication signals.

Parihaka.

Today we had to make a DLO of Parihaka. What happened in parihaka? About 1600 troops invaded the western Taranaki settlement of Parihaka, which had come to symbolise peaceful resistance to the confiscation of Māori land. Men from Parihaka who rebuilt their fences soon joined the ploughmen in detention. The prisoners were released in early 1881. that is a fact about Parhaka here are some questions about Parihaka. here is the slideshow 👇

Day 11 moeraki boulders

Day 11 Moeraki boulders

Today we left Dunedin to see the Moeraki boulders we had to walk down near the beach to see them there were lots of them me and my brother stood on one he fell off and got his foot wet because there was a wave coming in, here are some fun facts about the Moeraki boulders

1.There are over 50 boulders along koekohe beach
2.The biggest boulders weigh over 7 tons and measure over 2 meters across
3.It took about 2 million year for the largest boulders to form there current size. The tiny fragments however began forming about 60 million years ago

we then left the boulders and drove to Oamaru to see the big rainbow lolly factory shop. We brought some lollies for the rest of our Holiday and took a photo outside the shop doing a dab.

Day 10 Dunedin

Day 10 Dunedin

Today we went to the museum to see our granddads lions that got killed in Lawrence because they got out of there cages when they were doing a show there names were Sonia and Sultan. There is also a kids book that was made about them escaping and walking the streets of Lawrance before the local police had to shoot them for safety. The book is called the Lawrance Lions.Sonia got scared while out and scratched a kid with her claws. The boy was ok and just need to get some stitches. We also went to the city center which is called the octagon and had lunch. Dunedin also has the worlds steepest street which is called Baldwin street here are my photos.

Photos from rugby game

Day 9 Dunedin

Day 9 Dunedin

It took us 3 hours to get to Dunedin from Queenstown. That night we went to a ruby game at Forsyth Barr stadium it was Crusaders vs Highlanders. This is the first time we have have been to this ground we liked it because it had a roof on it so we did not get wet or cold i like this ground better then the one in chch it was weird because everyone was going for the Highlanders but we were going for the Crusaders. The end score was 40 to the Crusaders and 20 to the Highlanders the crowed was loud and they had a special area for the uni students which was called the zoo and that is were all the noise came from.

Day 8 Queenstown

Day 8 Queenstown

Today is our last day in Queenstown so we left our coolest activity to last which is the skyline gondola ride up the hill and the luge down the hill. The view from on top of the hill was beautiful. The luge was easy to drive but it was really fast you push the handle bar forward to go and pull the handle bar back to slow down it has no brakes. We got to go on the luge 5 times and i liked racing my family down to the bottom.after we finished the luge we got into the campervan and drove to our next town which was Dunedin.

Day 7 Queenstown

Day 7 Queenstown

Today when we woke up in queenstown it was really cold but it was a nice sunny day outside so we went down to the playground we walked around the town to find a cool place to have lunch and we found a little restaurant down stairs. After lunch we visited an aquarium where we learnt about the lake we saw some big eels and fish. Then we did some indoor go carts because it was still cold outside.

Day 6 Queenstown

Day 6 Queenstown

On day 6 we arrived in Queenstown i was happy we arrived in a city that was like chch. It had things like supermarkets, takeaways like KFC McDonald's and pizza hut and  it also had lots of clothing stores and the warehouse. We went in the town center that is built around a lake. The lake is called lake Wakatipu. It has nice clear blue water so we decided to go on a jet boat ride around the lake. Then we went to find a camp site to park the campervan up and make tea.

Day 4 and 5 Wanaka

Day 4 and 5 Wanaka

Today we arrived in Wanaka we went to a bakery so we could get lunch. After lunch we went to the playground then we went to see the famous tree that was growing in the lake but the water level was low so the trunk was not in the water. We went to puzzle word it was fun and we got stuck in the maze but we got out and we finished all the other activities. We went to a camp site checked out there facilities and had some dinner when we finished having dinner we walked around the town.On day 2 we went to our friends house because we haven't seen them since last year because they moved to Wanaka to live. It was cool to catch up up with them.

Day 3 Aoraki/Mt Cook

Day 3  - Aoraki / Mt Cook

We drove form Lake Tekapo to Aoraki Mt Cook it took a hour and a half.Mt Cook is New Zealand's biggest/tallest mountain, Mt Cook is 3,724m high.We did the Hooker valley track. This is a 3 hour walk with 3  river crossings surrounded by snow and mountains. The 3 suspension bridges were scary because when you cross over they shake and move round. It took 1 hour 45mins to get to the Hooker lake when we got to the hooker lake it was frozen over in parts and it had ice burgs in it. The ice burgs full off the glacier and float around in the lake this was the best walk I have ever been on.
